As much as I may hate the guy, Torts DEFINITELY is worth his weight in gold when it comes to entertainment factor. His attitude is so New York, which is such a culture-clash with Vancouver.

"YOU GONNA START YAH GOONS?! FACK YOU! I'M GONNA START MAH GOONS TOO!!"

-Insert obligatory Vancouver riot reference-

I like the concept of hockey and believe if I dedicated time to it, I'd be a huge fan. I caught the clip on Deadspin last night. I read the article and the comments. I was on the cusp of understanding why this happened.

But I don't understand!

I get that starting your fourth line is pretty much showing your intent to pick a fight. What I don't get are the reasons behind that. I don't know the teams well enough to see the strategy behind it. I do get why you're not going to start your first line against a fourth; injury or ejection would be a bad way to start a game. Were they initially hoping to target someone in particular? Was this meant to be a one-on-one thing and ended up escalating into a line brawl "just because"?

Deadspin's crowd complained fights like this are why hockey will never go "mainstream" in the US, but I think they're overestimating our sports fans. There's just subtleties and nuances the uninitiated simply don't get.

Well, I mean noone can know for sure why they started their fourth line. There are bascially two theories: Calgary is struggling really badly right now, and their fourth line scored a late goal for them in their last game, so the coach started them to reward that line for it's excellent play. Or. The coach of Calgary saw that Vancouver had fought quite a bit in it's previous two games so the coach decided "we're gonna hit them back first, if they try this".

This second opinion is what the coach of the Vancouver Canucks believed was happening. Therefore, if the other team sends out it goons and you believe they are there "just to fight" then you are not going to send out your best player to get creamed. You're going to send out your fighters.

Didn't see the game, but caught the highlights on sportscenter this morning. How about the kid who flew his parents in from Ontario for his rookie debut and then gets ejected in the first 2 seconds of the game! Not that it was his fault he got ejected, it was coaches orders, but man does that suck. Hopefully he gets to play a little more in his next game.
